Introdução: O número de pacientes classificados com sobrepeso ou obesos e, com isso, dos pacientes pós-bariátricas vem aumentando, gerando uma demanda por ritidoplastias neste perfil de público. O objetivo é expor a rotina e táticas cirúrgicas em um hospital de ensino, o perfil destes pacientes, além de um comparativo superficial histológico da pele, tecido celular subcutâneo e SMAS, entre os pacientes pós e não pós-bariátrica. Métodos: Foi realizado revisão de dados do centro cirúrgico e de prontuário entre os anos de 2012 e 2016 em um hospital público na cidade de Goiânia-GO, com levantamento de 32 casos. Resultados: A tática de ritidoplastia utilizada nos pacientes pós-bariátrica não apresenta grandes diferenças entre a utilizada nos pacientes não pós-bariátrica. A análise histopatológica das amostras colhidas evidenciou diferenças marcantes entre os pacientes pós e não pós-bariátrica. Conclusão: Percebeu-se que a técnica operatória na ritidoplastia do paciente pós-bariátrica sustentou detalhes específicos, com resultado cirúrgico pós-operatório satisfatório, uma pele de pior qualidade histológica, com complicações perioperatórias dentro do esperado e com necessidade de maiores estudos para avaliar durabilidade do procedimento.


Introduction: The number of patients classified as overweight or obese has resulted in an increased number of post-bariatric patients, generating a demand for rhytidoplasty in this public profile. The objective is to expose the routine and surgical tactics in a teaching hospital, patient profiles, subcutaneous cellular tissue, and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system are compared between post-bariatric and non-post-bariatric patients, as well as histological superficial comparison of the skin. Methods: A review of the data of 32 cases treated in 2012­2016 was conducted in a public hospital in Goiânia-GO. Results: The tactics of rhytidoplasty used in post-bariatric patients do not differ significantly from those used in nonpost- bariatric patients. A histopathological analysis of the collected samples showed marked differences between post-bariatric and non-post-bariatric patients. Conclusion: The surgical technique of rhytidoplasty of post-bariatric patients sustained specific details with satisfactory postoperative surgical results, skin with worse histological quality, perioperative complications within the expected range, and the need for further studies to assess the procedure's durability

Abstract Background: A skin field cancerization is a cutaneous area with subclinical changes resultant from chronic sun exposure, with a higher predisposition to development of pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions. So far, there are no well-defined objective parameters that can indicate their degree of activity. Objectives: To describe and compare morphometric aspects and expression of factors related to apoptosis and cell proliferation in actinic keratosis (AK), in both photoexposed and photoprotected epidermis. Methods: A cross-sectional study of patients with actinic keratosis in the forearms, biopsied at two points: the actinic keratosis and the axillary region. The biopsies of the actinic keratosis, perilesional area, and axilla were evaluated through keratinocyte intraepithelial neoplasia (KIN), and immunohistochemistry of p53, survivin, and Ki67. Nuclear morphometry of basal layer cells was performed through digital image analysis: entropy, area, perimeter, Ra, fractal dimension, circularity, color intensity, and largest diameter. Results: There were 13 patients included and 38 actinic keratosis biopsied. In morphometry, 1039 nuclei were analyzed, of which 228 represented axillary skin, 396 demonstrated actinic keratosis, and 415 represented the perilesional area to the actinic keratosis. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in all variables tested for the topographies evaluated. A significant correlation was identified between nucellar morphometric elements, KIN, proliferation markers, and apoptosis. Joint patterns of p53, Ki67, and KIN discriminated the topographies sampled. Study limitations: This was a cross-sectional study with a small number of patients. Conclusions: There are patterns of proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, and different cellular morphometrics between photoprotected skin and photoexposed skin. The joint expression of p53, Ki67, and KIN can characterize skin field cancerization activity.

Abstract: Background: Facial threading involves the removal of hairs to restore facial skin smoothness. However, its effectiveness has not been rigorously evaluated. Objective: To evaluate effects of facial threading on skin roughness, hydration, melanin index, and vellus hair on the face, complemented by a subjective evaluation of the tactile feel of the skin and improvement in skin color. Method: Participants who had not used exfoliators for two weeks before the experiment were included. Each participant underwent one session of facial threading every 21 days, for a total of 3 sessions. A three-dimensional skin roughness instrument and a multifunctional skin testing system were used to evaluate changes in roughness, hydration, and pigmentation on the forehead, cheeks, and corners of the mouth. A photomicrographic camera was used to record changes in vellus hair. Subjective reports of skin smoothness and color were recorded. Result: Eighteen participants completed the study. Facial threading produced a significant decrease in skin roughness on the forehead (22.42%, p = .013), right cheek (77%, p = .02), and left corner of the mouth (33.02%, p = .001). Subjective improvement in tactile feel of the skin and coloring were reported. Study Limitations: The study did not include randomization, with further limitations of a small sample size and a single site. Conclusion: Facial threading reduced skin roughness by 26.74% after three threading sessions, with improved subjective assessment of tactile feel and coloring. Future research should include a comparison with other cosmetic products with similar beautifying effects or a control group.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Vertebrates exhibit structural changes in their cardiovascular and gas exchange systems in response to hypoxic conditions in high altitude environments. In highland neotenic mole salamanders, as other amphibians, the majority of gases exchange is carried out for skin and gills. But, in high altitude environments, the available oxygen is lower than it is in the air thus, the scarcity of oxygen limits the survival of organisms. Many studies on this subject have focused on understanding the hematological mechanisms that amphibians exhibit in response to hypoxia. However, little is known about possible morphological changes in respiratory structures that may permit increased gas exchange during respiration in high altitude amphibians like Ambystoma leorae and A. rivulare, two threatened Mexican salamander species. The aim of the present study was to describe and compare the histological characteristics of the gills and dorsal skin of A. leorae and A. rivulare from populations at low and high altitudes. We found that, in comparison to lowland organisms, highland ones exhibited more pronounced skin folds, greater numbers of secondary branches in the gills, thinner dorsal and gill epidermises, and greater quantity of melanin surrounding the gill blood vessels. These differences permit a greater capacity for gas exchange and also increase thermoregulatory capacity in high altitude environments.


RESUMEN: Los anfibios que viven en ambientes de altitud se enfrentan a factores abióticos que limitan la vida, tales como la disminución de la presión barométrica con la consecuente disminución de la presión parcial de oxígeno (O2). Conocer los mecanismos que optimizan la obtención del O2 en estos animales es de gran importancia para entender las diferencias en la sensibilidad a la hipoxia de las diferentes especies. Ambystoma rivulare y A. leorae son anfibios endémicos del Estado de México que viven en ambientes de alta altitud por lo que se cree presentan estrategias fenotípicas para asimilar eficazmente el O2 y poder subsistir en los ambientes de altitud. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar las características histológicas de branquias y piel cefálica (que son las principales estructuras que se encargan del intercambio gaseoso) provenientes de tres poblaciones con diferente altitud. Nuestros resultados muestran que los organismos que habitan a mayor altitud tienden a aumentar la superficie de intercambio gaseoso, como es el caso de pliegues epidérmicos y ramas branquiales secundarias. Las diferencias histológicas de branquias y piel cefálica tanto interespecíficas como intraespecíficas respecto a la altitud parecen apoyar la idea de que los organismos modifican sus estructuras para contrarrestar las limitantes de la vida en ambientes de altitud.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the predictive value of the distance from skin to calyx (SCD) on the outcome and complication rates of patients undergoing mPNL. Materials and Methods Patient's charts, who had undergone mPNL between June 2012 and June 2015, were analyzed retrospectively. Patients who had a preoperative computerized tomography (CT) were enrolled into the study. Two separateurologists evaluated the CT scans and calculated the SCD defined as the distance between the skin and surface/lateral edge of the calyx, which was the preferred site of entry for percutaneous access. The average value of the two measurements was included inthe final analysis to avoid bias. The mean SCD was 75mm. According to the median SCD value, patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (SCD ≤75) and group 2 (SCD >75). Results A total of 140 patients and 130 patients were enrolled in groups 1 and 2, respectively. The mean operation time and the mean fluoroscopy time was significantly longer in group 2 (p:0.004 vs. p:0.021). The rate of blood transfusion was significantly higher in group 1 (6 patients). None of patientsin group 2required blood transfusion (p:0.017). Stone-free status after a single session of mPNL was 67.1% in group 1 and 75.4% in group 2 (p:0.112). After additional procedures, stone-free rates increased to 84.3% and 85.4% in group 1 and group 2, respectively (p:0.802). Conclusion Our study demonstrated that longer SCD was not a predictive factor for stone-free rates after mPNL. However, SCD over 75mm was associated with longer operation time and fluoroscopy time with lower rates of transfusion.

ABSTRACT

Os fixadores biológicos desempenham um papel importante na qualidade final da histologia. Na rotina veterinária, a biópsia de pele é um procedimento comum e a escolha do fixador é primordial para resultado final adequado. Os fixadores mais usados são à base de formalina, ainda que sejam tóxicos, cancerígenos, de baixa penetração e de fixação lenta. Mesmo assim, não existe um fixador ideal que substitua as suas qualidades. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar qualitativamente a preservação das características histológicas de pele de cão utilizando diferentes fixadores de tecidos incluídos em parafina, cortados e corados pela hematoxilina-eosina. Utilizou-se uma caneta Punch de 4 milímetros para coletar amostras de pele de orelha em seis cadáveres de cães. Após coleta, os tecidos foram fixados em: (1) Bouin, durante seis horas; (2) Carnoy, durante quatro horas; (3) formaldeído tamponado 10% durante 24 horas, todos sob refrigeração (4ºC). Posteriormente, os tecidos foram processados, cortados e corados em hematoxilina e eosina. As lâminas foram avaliadas, às cegas, por quatro patologistas diferentes, que consideraram aspectos qualitativos a seguir: (1) qualidade da coloração; (2) preservação das características histológicas; e (3) preservação dos limites citoplasmáticos utilizando a escala de LIKERT de pontuação para cada lâmina. O fixador com a maior média de pontuação em todos os itens foi o formol tamponado com 3,76 pontos, seguido pelo Bouin (3,39) e pelo Carnoy (2,52). O formol pode trazer riscos à saúde do profissional que rotineiramente o manuseia, portanto se faz necessária a busca por fixadores com as mesmas qualidades, mas menos nocivos à saúde.(AU)


The biological fixatives have an important role in the final histology quality. In veterinary, routine skin biopsy is a common procedure and the choice of fixative is essential for the final result. The most common fixative is Formalin, even though it is toxic, carcinogenic, and has low and slow penetration. Still, there isn't a fixer which can replace the qualities of formalin. The aim of this study was to evaluate qualitatively the preservation of the histological features of dog skin using different tissue fixative embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin - eosin. We used a 4 mm punch pen to collect ear skin samples in six dog cadavers. After collection, the tissues were fixed in: (1) Bouin for 6 hours; (2) Carnoy for 4 hours; (3) 10% buffered formaldehyde for 24 hours, all under refrigeration (4 ° C). The tissues were then processed, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The slides were evaluated blindly by four different pathologists who considered the qualitative aspects below: (1) quality of coloring; (2) preservation of the histological characteristics; (3) preservation of cytoplasmic boundaries using a Likert scale score for each blade. The fixative with the highest mean score on all items was buffered formalin with 3.76 points followed by Bouin (3.39) and Carnoy (2.52). Formaldehyde can bring health a risk of professional routine handling, so it is necessary to search for a biological fixative with the same qualities being less harmful to health.(AU)

INTRODUÇÃO: Dermatofibrossarcoma protuberante é um tumor de pele raro e de malignidade intermediária, com baixo potencial metastático, mas altas taxas de recorrência após tratamento cirúrgico. Por apresentar eventual semelhança clínica com cicatrizes hipertróficas e queloides, o diagnóstico correto mostra-se fundamental para o sucesso do tratamento. O objetivo do presente trabalho é fazer um alerta e relatar quatro casos de dermatofibrossarcoma protuberante erroneamente diagnosticados como queloide e tratados alhures com infiltração de acetonido de triancinolona. MÉTODO: Entre novembro de 1983 e janeiro de 2008, foram atendidos quatro pacientes com dermatofibrossarcoma protuberante que tinham sido submetidos alhures a infiltrações intralesionais de acetonido de triancinolona, em virtude de diagnóstico errôneo de queloide. Nos quatro casos, foram realizadas excisões cirúrgicas radicais, com remoção de 3 cm de tecido sadio nas margens laterais, incluindo-se, na margem profunda, uma estrutura anatômica não infiltrada pelo tumor. Os pacientes receberam avaliação médica periódica em longo prazo. RESULTADOS: Os pacientes foram acompanhados por uma média de 159 meses. Três pacientes (75%) permaneceram vivos, sem sinais de doença em atividade. Um paciente (25%) faleceu devido à doença, após tentativa de remover o avançado tumor recorrente, por meio de extensa cirurgia craniofacial. A recidiva ocorreu sete anos após a operação radical. CONCLUSÃO: Dermatofibrossarcoma protuberante deve ser considerado no diagnóstico diferencial dos queloides. A infiltração intralesional de acetonido de triancinolona só deverá ser realizada após diagnóstico de certeza, que pode demandar exame anatomopatológico prévio. Um exame clínico cuidadoso e o conhecimento da lesão favorecem um diagnóstico preciso e, portanto, um tratamento adequado.


INTRODUCTION: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare skin tumor with intermediate malignancy, low metastatic potential, and high recurrence rates after surgical treatment. Owing to a possible clinical resemblance with hypertrophic scars and keloids, the correct diagnosis is fundamental for treatment success. The objective of the present work is to report on four cases of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans misdiagnosed as keloid and treated elsewhere with infiltration of triamcinolone acetonide. METHOD: Between November 1983 and January 2008, four patients with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans who had undergone intralesional infiltration with triamcinolone acetonide elsewhere were treated because of an erroneous diagnosis of keloid. Radical surgical excision was performed, and 3 cm of healthy tissue was removed from the side margins, including the deep margin, an anatomical structure not infiltrated by the tumor. The patients underwent long-term periodic medical evaluations. RESULTS: The patients were followed-up for an average of 159 months. Three patients (75%) are still alive without signs of disease at the time of this report. One patient (25%) died of the disease after an attempt to remove the advanced recurrent tumor using extensive craniofacial surgery. Recurrence occurred 7 years after the radical operation. CONCLUSION: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans must be considered in the differential diagnosis of keloids. Intralesional infiltration with triamcinolone acetonide should only be performed after diagnostic confirmation , which may require pathological examination. A careful clinical examination and knowledge of the lesion favor a precise diagnosis and an appropriate treatment.

ABSTRACT

Recent advances in the fields of biomaterials and nanotechnology have allowed the development of advanced nanoparticles for biomedical applications. Despite a vast number of nanostructures such as liposomes, solid­lipid nanocapsules, polymeric and hybrid lipid­polymer nanoparticles have been studied as carriers for drug delivery for different pathologies with remarkable promising results; the use of polymeric nanoparticles in dermocosmetic still has not been widely explored. The evolution of cosmetic into the care skin and dermatology represents novel technological challenges. Also, the increasing knowledge about normal skin physiology and advances in nanotechnology provide an attractive environment for the creation of innovative dermocosmetic formulations. In this work, we discuss the state of the art of polymeric nanoparticles formulated for dermocosmetics, its mechanisms of action, and diffusion into the skin.


Los recientes avances en el campo de los biomateriales y la nanotecnología han permitido el desarrollo de nanopartículas avanzadas para aplicaciones biomédicas. A pesar de que un gran número de nanoestructuras tales como liposomas, nanocápsulas lípido-sólidas, nanopartículas poliméricas y lípido-polímero híbridas han sido estudiadas como vehículos para la administración de fármacos en diferentes patologías con notables resultados prometedores, el uso de nanopartículas poliméricas en dermocosmética todavía no ha sido ampliamente explorado. La evolución de la cosmética en el cuidado de la piel y la dermatología nos enfrentan a nuevos retos tecnológicos. Además, el aumento de los conocimientos sobre la fisiología de la piel normal y los avances en la nanotecnología proporcionan un entorno atractivo para la creación de formulaciones dermocosméticas innovadoras. En este trabajo se discute el estado del arte de las nanopartículas poliméricas desarrolladas para dermocosmética, sus mecanismos de acción y la difusión en la piel.

Backg round: Dermatofibroma sometimes clinically presents as a nodular lesion without gross skin surface change. Clinicopathologic features of this variant of dermatofi broma have not been evaluated. Aims: To assess clinicopathologic features of dermatofi broma presenting as a subcutaneous nodule. Methods: This study reviewed the clinical and histological features of 42 cases of subcutaneous dermatofibromas and compared them with 95 cases of conventional dermatofi broma. Results: Dermatofi broma without gross skin surface change was associated with a shorter pre-diagnosis duration than conventional dermatofi broma. Increase in size during the pre-diagnosis period was signifi cantly more frequent in the conventional type. In addition, these dermatofi bromas were more likely than the conventional type to occur in the head and neck region. Although tumor depth was deeper than in the conventional type, less than half of the dermatofi bromas without gross skin surface change were found histologically to be “subcutaneous” or “deep-penetrating dermatofi broma”. Subcutaneous extension was more frequent in these dermatofi bromas while focal stromal hyalinization and hemosiderin deposits were more common in the conventional type. Limitations: This study is a retrospective, single center design. Conclusion: The present study suggests that dermatofi broma without gross skin surface change is a variant type with distinct clinical and histological features that distinguish them from conventional dermatofi broma.

Background: Poroscopy is the term applied to the study of the pore characteristics found on the papillary ridges of the skin as a method of identification which was proved to be reliable and accurate


Objective: The goal of this work was to examine the epidermal pores among the adult Upper Egyptians and to detect the influence of gender on their frequency, type, size and shape. So far, no previous research handled this topic on the Upper Egyptians


Subjects and methods: The inked left thumb prints of 200 adult Upper Egyptians [100 males and 100 females] within an age range of 18 - 20 years were examined


Results: The results revealed that the mean number of the epidermal pores in a specific area was greater in the females with a statistically significant difference. As regard the type, size and shape of the pores, it was observed that the closed, medium-sized and circular pores were the most common in both sexes. The females had statistically significant more pores opened on one side and on both sides. Also, the females had more small and medium-sized pores with statistically significant differences. The females had statistically significant values for the circular, triangular and rectangular pores whereas the males had more miscellaneous pores with a statistically significant difference


Conclusion: The characters of the pores present on the papillary ridges of the skin may be used as means of identification and sexual differentiation for the Upper Egyptians

En cirugía dermatológica el aspecto final de la cicatriz es un hecho relevante, principalmente en cirugías electivas. En la actualidad existen más de 40 guías clínicas cuya finalidad es orientar al cirujano en la realización de una incisión que le permita obtener el mejor resultado. Las líneas de Langer, son las más conocidas y empleadas en la actualidad, se basan en el seguimiento de líneas de menor tensión en la piel, al momento de realizar la incisión cutánea. Fueron descritas por Dupuytren y luego dadas a conocer por Langer como resultado de experimentos realizados en cadáveres. En la presente revisión, conoceremos los orígenes de estas líneas, la existencia de otras líneas de interés en dermatología, sus aplicaciones clínicas y la evidencia existente a favor y en contra de su uso en cirugías dermatológicas electivas.


In dermatologic surgery, the final appearance of the scar is a significant event, specially in elective surgeries. Currently there are over 40 clinical guidelines which aim to guide the surgeon in performing an incision that allows you to get the best result. Langer lines are the most known and used at present. They are based on the lower skin tension lines, for making the skin incision. Langer lines were described by Dupuytren and then released by Langer as a result of experiments on cadavers. In this review, we will know the origins of these lines, the existence of other lines of interest in dermatology, clinical applications and the evidence for and against its use in elective dermatologic surgery.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar histológica e histo- químicamente a pele do jurará (Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides). Foram utilizados seis animais (três machos e três fêmeas). Os animais foram eutanasiados com dose letal de tiopental sódico a 2,5%, para colheita de fragmentos de pele mole das patas e pescoço do animal, que após a fixação em líquido de Bouin, foram incluídos em parafina e corados pelas técnicas de hematoxilina-eosina, Giemsa, Sirius red, Reticulina de Gomori e Fucsina-resorcina de Weigert. Os resultados revelaram que a pele do jurará é delgada e composta de epiderme e derme. A epiderme é formada por estrato germinativo constituído por uma única camada de células cilíndricas; estrato espinhoso apresentando duas ou três camadas de células poliédricas; o estrato granuloso não foi observado nos exemplares estudados O estrato córneo apresenta uma delgada camada de queratina mole. Na derme, os fibroblastos foram as células mais freqüentes e as fibras colágenas formavam feixes espessos dispostos em várias direções. No método do Picro Sirius Red sob luz polarizada observou-se que, independente da região analisada, há predomínio de fibras colágenas tipo I em relação ao colágeno tipo III. Foi também observados mastócitos em pequena quantidade e fibras elásticas na região subepidérmica. Concluiu-se que a pele de Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides possui características semelhantes a dos demais vertebrados (anfíbios, aves e mamíferos), apresenta peculiaridades, como por exemplo, a ausência de papilas dérmicas e glândulas...


The aim of this paper was to study the histology and histochemistry of the skin of six specimens of muçuã (three males and three females). The animals were euthanized through a lethal dose of sodium thiopental at 2.5%. Fragments of the soft skin were fixed in Bouin's solution and processed for inclusion in paraffin. The sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Giemsa, Sirius red, Gomori's reticulin and Weigert's fuchsin-resorcin. The results revealed that the skin is thin and constituted by epidermis and dermis. The epidermis is made up by one layer of cylindrical cells of stratum germinativum, two or three layers of poliedric cells of stratum spinosum, but without stratum granular. The stratum corneum consists of a thin layer of soft keratin. In the dermis, the fibroblasts were the most frequent cells and collagen fibers formed a thick bound displayed in several directions. The Sirius red under polarized light showed that type I collagen was predominant when compared with the occurrence of type III collagen. Mast cells were also found, and elastic fibers were seen in the subepidermic layer. We concluded that the skin of Kinosternon scorpioides scorpioides has histological features similar to other vertebrates (amphibia, aves, mammalia), however without dermal papillae and glands...

ABSTRACT

O presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar o efeito tópico da própolis na proliferação de fibroblastos e a disposição e volume de fibras colágenas presentes durante o processo de reparo tecidual. Foram utilizados ratos wistar, machos, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Controle (CC) n=16 lesão tratada com creme não-iônico; Grupo Própolis (PP) n=16 lesão tratada com creme não-iônico + Própolis 10%. Nos 4º, 7°, 14° e 21° dias de tratamento foram sacrificados 4 animais de cada grupo em câmara de gás carbônico. O tecido lesionado foi coletado e fixado em formalina a 10% por 48 horas, incluído em álcool a 70%, fixado em parafina e depositado em lâminas para análise histológica. Os resultados demonstraram um aumento no número de fibroblastos e também maior e melhor disposição de fibras colágenas no grupo PP em relação ao grupo CC. Assim, as evidências obtidas no estudo mostraram que o efeito da própolis na aceleração do processo de reparo tecidual não é somente por sua ação antiinflamatória, conforme diversos estudos demonstram, mas também por sua ação direta sobre a proliferação de fibroblastos, acelerando a reversão de fibrócito para fibroblasto, e, consequentemente favorecendo a síntese e deposição de fibras colágenas, melhorando o reparo tecidual e reduzindo o tempo de cicatrização...


This study aimed to verify the effect of topical propolis on fibroblast proliferation and disposicao and volume of collagen fibers present in the tissue repair process. We used male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: control (CC) n = 16 lesions treated with non-ionic cream; Propolis Group (PP) n = 16 lesion treated with non-ionic cream + 10% propolis. At 4, 7, 14 and 21 days of treatment where sacrificed four animals from each group in a carbon dioxide chamber. The injured tissue was collected and fixed in 10% formalin for 48 hours, then in 70% alcohol, embedded in paraffin and placed on slides for histological analysis. The results showed an increase in the number of fibroblasts and also bigger and better arrangement of collagen fibers in PP group than in CC group. Thus, the evidence obtained in the study showed that the effect of propolis to speed up tissuerepair process is not only for its anti-inflammatory action, as several studies show, but also by its direct action on the proliferation of fibroblasts, accelerating the rate at which fibrocytes revert to fibroblasts, and collagen fiber arrangement, improving tissue repair and reducing the healing time...

ABSTRACT

PurposeWe developed a stereotactic device to guide the puncture for percutaneous nephrolithotripsy, which uses the distance from the target calyx to its perpendicular point on skin (SCD) to calculate the needle´s entry angle. This study seeks to validate the use of measurements obtained by ultrasound (US) and computerized tomography (CT) for needle´s entry angle calculation and to study factors that may interfere in this procedure.Materials and MethodsHeight, weight, abdominal circumference, CT of the urinary tract in dorsal decubitus (DD) and ventral decubitus (VD), and US of the kidneys in VD were obtained from thirty-five renal calculi patients. SCD obtained were compared and correlated with body-mass index (BMI).ResultsBMI was 28.66 ± 4.6 Kg/m2. SCD on CT in DD was 8.40 ± 2.06cm, in VD was 8.32 ± 1.95cm, in US was 6.74 ± 1.68cm. SCD measured by US and CT were statistically different (p < 0.001), whereas between CT in DD and VD were not. SCD of the lower calyx presented moderate correlation with BMI.ConclusionSCD obtained by CT in ventral and dorsal decubitus may be used for calculation of the needle´s entry angle. SCD obtained by US cannot be used. A rule for the correlation between BMI and the SCD could not be determined.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the subcutaneous injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) on neuropeptides Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) and Substance P (SP) secretion in rat skin. Fifty-six Wistar-EPM rats were distributed in two groups: one for CGRP analysis, the other for SP analysis. Each group was subdivided into four subgroups: control (Cont), control with needle (ContNd), CO2 injection (CO2Inj) and atmospheric air injection (AirInj) - with seven animals each. Sample analyses of partial skin were conducted by Western Blotting (WB). RESULTS: In SP group, there was a decrease in the amount of neuropeptides in subgroups CO2Inj and AirInj. Similarly, in CGRP group, there was a decrease in the amount of pro-CGRP neuropeptides (15 kDa) in subgroups CO2Inj and AirInj; Nevertheless, there was no decrease in the amount of CGRP (5 kDa) in any subgroups. Subcutaneous injection of CO2 and atmospheric air decreased the amount of Substance P and pro-Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (15 kDa) neuropeptides in rat skin.

ABSTRACT

To describe a new experimental flap for studying skin viability in rats. METHODS: Twenty male Wistar rats weighing between 250-300g were divided into two groups: group A - McFarlane technique, a 4 x 10cm flap was used (McFarlane); and in group B modified McFarlane technique, a 3 x 10cm flap was used. Seven days later, the animals were sacrificed and the area of necrosis was evaluated in both groups. RESULTS: Group A presented necrosis in 3% of the total area of the flap (CI: 0.01-0.05), Group B presented necrosis in 37% of the total area of the flap (CI: 0.29-0.46), (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The modified McFarlane flap presented a larger area of necrosis and could be an adequate experimental model of skin flap viability.

ABSTRACT

No tratamento dos pacientes vítimas de desenluvamento atendidos de maneira correta e precoce, a enxertia primária, com utilização da pele proveniente dos retalhos traumáticos é fundamental. Podem ser utilizados enxertos em ambas as espessuras, parcial ou total, não existindo na literatura uma definição em relação à melhor opção. Esta pele, também, pode ser utilizada de maneira imediata ou após conservação em banco de tecidos. Descrevemos neste artigo as principais técnicas para retirada de enxertos dos retalhos traumáticos.


Primary grafting using skin from traumatic flaps is essential in the correct and early treatment of patients with degloving injuries. Split- or full-thickness grafts can be used; however, the literature does not yet provide any indication of the best option. Moreover, this skin also can also be used immediately or after tissue bank storage. This report describes the main techniques for graft removal from traumatic flaps.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: O sucesso de um enxerto de pele é avaliado não apenas pela integração do enxerto em si, mas também pela qualidade da recuperação da área doadora. A despeito de as áreas doadoras de enxertos representarem o melhor local para estudo de cicatrização de feridas, regimes de tratamento, de áreas doadoras, tem sido incompletamente estudados. Objetivo: Avaliação da eficácia de espumas de poliuretano como curativo de áreas doadoras de enxertos. Método: Estudo prospectivo no qual áreas doadoras de enxertos foram tratadas com espumas de poliuretano como alternativa a filmes de acetato de celulose. Resultados: Foram tratados 11 pacientes e catorze áreas doadoras de enxerto. Aderência prolongada (73%) e odor desagradável (45%) foram os problemas encontrados. Os resultados foram considerados insatisfatórios na grande maioria dos casos (73%). Conclusões: O uso de espumas de poliuretano mostrou-se ineficaz, nesse grupo de pacientes, devido à ocorrência de alto índice de complicações.


Introduction: The success of a skin graft is evaluated by not only the integration of the graft itself, but also the quality of the recovery of the donor site. Despite the fact that graft donor sites represent the best place to study wound healing, treatment regimens for donor sites have not been studied extensively. Method: To evaluate the efficiency of polyurethane foam as a dressing for graft donor sites. Methods: We conducted a prospective study in which graft donor sites were treated with polyurethane foam dressing, as an alternative to a cellulose acetate film. Results: We treated 11 patients and 14 donor graft sites. Problems associated with the use of polyurethane foam included prolonged adherence (73%) and an unpleasant odor (45%). The majority of patients reported that they found the dressing to be unsatisfactory (73%). Conclusions: The use of a polyurethane foam was shown to be ineffective as a graft donor site dressing, due to the high rate of associated complications.

ABSTRACT

The ritual of Kambô or Sapo is a type of voluntary envenomation. During this purification ritual a shaman healer, from various South American countries, deliberately burns the right shoulder with a glowing stick from a fireplace. Excretions of Phyllomedusa bicolor (or Giant Leaf Frog, Kambô or Sapo) are then applied to these fresh wounds. This ritual is used as a means of purification of the body, supposedly brings luck to hunters, increases stamina and enhances physical and sexual strength. All the peripheral and most of the central effects of the secretion can be ascribed to the exceptionally high content of active peptides, easily absorbed through burned skin. This article describes the ritual and the bio-active peptides from the secretion.
